Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year, we have challenged our 7th and 8th grade students to participate in The 50 Book Challenge. Each student is being challenged to read 50 books (or as many as they can). In order for them to even consider doing this, I have to have the books that they want to read.

My school is a 7th/8th grade Title 1 middle school.

Ninety-six percent of our students qualify for free/reduced lunch and of those, 88% qualify for free lunch. Most of my students come from literacy poor homes as well. They do not have easy access to quality literature. Most of my students come from homes with no books. They also avoid using the library because of the fear of losing books and having to pay to replace them or pay overdue fines.

My Project

The 50 Book Challenge is a huge undertaking. This challenge seems very overwhelming to most students and adults. We talk about what it means to take on a challenge, how to overcome fear, how to succeed even if you "fail" and how to persevere when you don't think you can accomplish a big goal. I know that if I have the types of books that interest my students, they'll be more motivated to read. My students want to read books that are mirrors to their lives. I want them to also have books that are windows--books that allow them to see how others live and think. They need to see the importance and value that reading has for them now and how this challenge will benefit them for the rest of their lives. Simply put, my students need books, magazines and bookcases to store the materials! They need easy and free access to good books.

I cannot wait to open the boxes of new books and I anticipate their "flying' out of my room and into their hands. When kids know that adults in the community care about their educational well being, they care about their own educational well being. This project will help my students become life-long readers.
