My Students

Our school is close to two military bases, and many of my kids are the children of deployed military personnel. The school is urban and old.

My students represent the very best in America but many do not have money for food.

My school has a tradition of being a neighborhood school but it is now a school in transition. The stable neighborhood is changing, 18.4% of the families received Supplemental Social Security Income or Public Assistance. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. Ten percent are in bilingual/ bi-cultural programs. We have students from Somalia, China, the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Pakistan, as well as Natives from the Alaskan rural areas. Some students are enrolled at our school because it is a school that is close to the regional hospital where their parents are getting treatment.

My Project

Last year I asked my fifth graders what they needed to become healthy. They immediately replied that they need to learn how to cook so they could take care of themselves and their siblings. Our school does not have a kitchen and fifth graders do not have access to a stove/oven in school. They felt that if they could learn to cook, they could teach other children to cook. They were particularly interested in teaching their younger siblings to make healthy choices. Students brainstormed what we would need to make it happen and they said we needed an oven and some cook books.

Our school is 100% free breakfast and lunch and often those free meals are the only food my students have so weekends and holidays are not days of celebration but they are days with special problems.

On those days there may be nothing to eat. Some students take care of younger siblings while a parent is getting treatment. My students need to learn how to feed themselves. My students need a oven/stove and cookbooks to use every week in order to learn how to cook and create low-cost, nutritious, healthy meals and snacks.

My students desperately want and need to learn how to cook for themselves. The equipment(electric oven) and cook books from this grant will enable them to learn to cook in the classroom and take the first steps toward eating healthy meals and snacks.
