Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as Attention-Deficit, Dyslexia, Social-Emotional, and Autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with social-economic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful, and eager to come to school—their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
My project involves the study of insects, which will also embrace researching the STEM Career of Entomology! My students are wild about science and two of them have already decided their careers—a zoologist and a marine biologist. Although there lies an interest in animals and fish, when we read about insects, they are very inquisitive and want to know more!
To prepare for this project, I listened to the podcasts and Youtube videos of Dr. Corrie Moreau and her love of studying ants!
She also is founder of an insect lab at the local museum, which I have borrowed an insect kit to jumpstart my project! I know that my students will be fascinated with her passion for science and its relationship to insects, specifically ants. While ants are amazing, I want my students to compare and contrast varied insects in our classroom for in-depth scientific STEM discussion and engage in an ongoing inquiry and research about insects!
Given that my students are predominately visual (sight) and kinesthetic-tactile (movement; hands-on) learners, each resource was selected based on their interest coupled with how they learn best. Amazing Bugs Kit (with live ants), butterflies in the Classroom Kit (with live caterpillars), Ladybugs in the Classroom Kit (with live ladybug larvae), and the Ants Amazing Bugs Kit (with live ants) will allow my students to study three types of insects. The Photographic Atlas of Entomology will support students in comparing and contrasting live insects with other insects in the guide. The Insects Activity Tub will allow students of all learning styles to explore the aesthetics of insects. The Insects Book Library will build background knowledge as the Insects Prepared Slide Kit will teach about body parts. The camera is to take pictures of their unique life cycles. Kid Entomology Rules!
