Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are amazing fourth and fifth graders, who deserve the very best! They are fun, energetic, and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so some students do not have the same opportunities as others. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title I program.

Despite our economic and learning challenges for my special population kids, our community is very supportive and makes our little school a great place to learn!

Although my students are not diverse in race and background, they are all creative by nature and very different in the way they think and learn. Our urban school is located in a community that supports the arts, STEAM, extracurricular activities, and provides support for our ADHD and Autistic population. Many students come into school looking forward to simple things like taking a photo, singing a song, or getting a hello from a friend. For some of them, this interaction is the only positive part of their day.

My Project

Learning is most impactful when students are able to connect lessons to their own lives. I am requesting an iPad and printer ink to engage students in their own campaigns. I have jobs in the classroom that are very popular. I usually spin a selection wheel and randomly assign students to each task. Why not use that process and convert it into an actual Kid Campaign? If you want the job, convince us as to why you are the most qualified person.

Mock kid campaigns will make the civic process relevant to my students.

The iPad is a versatile tool for designing campaign posters, flyers, and advertisements that would summarize your qualifications. The ink will allow for these campaign materials to be printed and distributed to our school community. I feel that kids are disconnected from civics because they feel that they don't have a voice. This project allows them to experience what it is to be active citizens and be heard loud and clear. Thank you!
