Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am trying to give my students an opportunity to be introduced to computer science (coding). The state of NJ passed a bill on 2018 that every-school should offer computer science. I thought in 2018 and after that the principal of the building and the district administration did not allow me to teach it anymore. This year's new principal allowed me at least to run the club again. Students are using block coding programming language (code.org, blocky, scratch etc.). From my past experience students get bored very quickly and sometimes do not finish all units i.e. from code.org curriculum (CS Discoveries, or CS Principles). Arduino and Makey Makey Kits are better because they engaged students to hands on activities which from my past experience had better participation. Also arduino circuit boards are used to a wide range of objects on real life (remote controls, microwaves, switches etc.). The objective of this project is that the students will build a "kid-robot" and use the Arduino board and controllers to make robot perform simple task (moving to a certain path, sense barriers and change direction accordingly etc.). They will be able to make a "led light show" by attaching some led lights on the board of the "kit-robot" by writing code using Arduino software and transmitted to the "kid-robot"via controller. The Arduino Student Kit is easy to use and includes all the need it main parts in one box. I am planning to use these kits not only for my Robotics & CS but also for my students in my Math classes so they have opportunities to be introduced to Robotics and CS because the administrators in the district have no plans of giving them this opportunity. The Makey-Makey kit will be used to change everyday objects to electronic components (mouse, controller etc.)
