My Students

My gym is very diverse, I have students from just about every culture. We are an elementary school of about 300 students in East Harlem. Just about all the students qualify for free school lunch.

My students either live here in East Harlem or even sections of the Bronx.

They are an enthusiastic group, who love team sports. The school is a small elementary school of about 300 students. We, as teachers and faculty, try to do what we can but we can only help so much. Right now most of my students are begging to start soccer, I have balls and cones but no goals to teach shooting and goal keeping. I want to be able to supply them with the knowledge for the future.

My Project

With the materials I am requesting my students will be able to learn to shoot goals in soccer and how to be a goal keeper if they wish during class. After school the soccer club I was asked to start will use the materials to play intramural games as well as teach skills to students who have never played soccer before but want to learn. We will also be able to use them during other units, like hockey.

It will improve my classroom because I will be able to teach something the students want to learn and something I want to teach them.

Most of the students who want to play soccer are also looking forward to teaching the skills they know to their fellow classmate. These materials will expose some of my students to a sport they have never played before, in a safe environment.
