Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school has Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT) classes in each grade level. This school year, I will have a group of 5th graders who are very energetic and enthusiastic! Most of the students in my class face different struggles in their home lives and at school.

In our classroom students will feel supported academically and emotionally.

My co-teacher and I will provide academic support to our students based on their learning needs. But we also look forward to providing students with more social-emotional support in the classroom which can lead to significant positive effects in their learning. One way is through a morning meeting routine where students will have the opportunity to share and feel supported by their peers and teachers.

My Project

After almost two years at home we will be welcoming all students back to the classroom. Many of the students have not attended school in person since the third grade. Transitioning to in person learning may come with many challenges for some students. For example, this group will be taking the state exams for the first time. They would have taken the state test for the first time in the Spring of 2020. Many standardized testing can cause anxiety and stress.

I want to promote a growth mindset so my students believe they can do hard things.

Developing a Growth Mindset is more than just having a positive attitude. Students who have a growth mindset believe that their talents can be developed through hard work and implementing good strategies. Fostering a growth mindset in students cannot be accomplished with one activity. The Growth Mindset Daily Practice Journal provides the students with weekly motivational passages for 36 weeks. For each day of the week, students can answer text-based questions and reflect on their own experiences. If a student can begin to develop a growth mindset in elementary school it will be beneficial for their journey as learners.

I look forward to displaying the posters to create a positive learning environment. Also, I want students to leave my classroom with the understanding that they are lifelong learners. With a growth mindset, they can learn new skills and overcome challenges well beyond their school years.
