Kicking COVID Out Our Class

Help me give my students iPads to bridge educational gaps from the pandemic. Due to Covid-19 many of our students will be without instruction for over 5 months. These iPads will provide additional reading and math support.

My Students

We see so many faces and touch so many souls; after every face and every soul, we grow a deeper connection to the world. I love my students because every child is a reflection of their own tree rooted and weathered by many seasons of life. They all carry so much life. My students are students of a performing arts school while still making academics their main focus. At Longfellow, we service about 90% economically disadvantaged kiddos. Despite the disadvantage they face daily, school is their priority.

My students have taught me no matter what storm you may weather, be the flower that blooms.

Working in an economically disadvantaged neighborhood we have this preconceived notion that their tree will be a little uprooted with a couple of bruised branches. Where that may be the reality for some; all come in with big smiles and huge hearts. My students have shown me that it's not about the storm, it's about the flowers that bloom from the rain.

My Project

When we say Houston Strong we mean it! In the past few years, we have endured and pushed through adversity after adversity. Our students have pushed through Harvey and a worldwide Pandemic. Although they are tough, they still face many hardships. Being 90% economically disadvantaged my students still show up and show out for their education. About 53% of our students come to us behind. No matter what they still push hard. These iPads will further bridge those instructional gaps.

By the third grade, if a child cannot read, they are projected to drop out of school.

Reading programs like Imagine Literacy and Imagine Math has been proven to grow students 2 or more levels. While these programs are not the end-all, they are pushing the needle that much further.
