This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every day we come in and get right to work. When my students enter the gymnasium, it is non-stop movement. We begin with an intense 5 minute run/calisthenic workout to jump start their engines (and I do the workout along with them). We then get to our lesson and end with nice static stretches.

The students at our school are given a chance, which is rare in the inner city of Philadelphia, at college.

We are a college prep school, teaching the students how to become successful not only now, but in the future. Students mainly come from low income urban environments, where not only are they statistically fighting the odds of going to college, but also even graduating high school. We give them a shot at making it. 75 percent of our 9th graders enter at least 5 years behind in reading and math, but by the end of their first year 86 percent of those students will catch up. 84 percent of students graduate in four years compared to the Philadelphia district school average of 60 percent. 94 percent of graduates go on to college and 84 percent of graduates who enrolled as first year college students returned. Our school guarantees a safe environment, proactive in peer mediation to resolve disputes before they escalate.

My Project

My longest unit in our Gym is the Futsal unit. I began this last year in the hopes that my students would fall in love with the game as much as me, and they did. Now it's time to take futsal to the next level by getting proper equipment. I have added new, regulation goals so we no longer have to use broken hockey nets. There will be new goalkeeper gloves for each team so they can stop sharing my old pair from 3 years ago. New Mikasa balls, training equipment, and coaching books will help my students become the players they want to be. I'm most excited about new pinnies, the ones we currently use cost a dollar a piece and every one of them is torn or ripped. My students deserve to use real equipment and not old hand me downs!

I preach futsal and soccer to my students on a regular basis, not just because I'm a player and avid fan (Go Union!), but because of the benefits that it can provide them.

Philadelphia is largely dominated by basketball, but by offering students an alternative, many of them could easily walk onto a college soccer team by starting to learn fundamentals in middle school. Every single Philadelphia University is D1 men's and women's soccer, and this is my goal: getting my students there!
