My Project

I am working to expand my school’s piano keyboard inventory so that my students can experience learning music through piano. Not only is it an area of high interest for students, it supports numerous musical concepts such as musical literacy, instrument technique, melody, and harmony.

Piano provides hands-on experiences that increase engagement with and understanding of these concepts, which supports their continuation of music education in middle and high school.

Instruments unfortunately tend to add up quickly, so this can be a long process, but your support will help us expand so that one day we will have enough keyboards for a full class set. Funding for rechargeable AA batteries and their chargers will also help this endeavor be more cost-effective and environmentally friendly in the long run.

My students come from the far east side of Portland, an area of the Portland Metro that has often been underserved. We are a Title 1 school with 100% free lunch. Many of my students cannot afford to take piano lessons independently, so school may be the first and only place that they are given the opportunity to experience learning piano. This will not only give equal access to all of my students, but it may uncover an interest in piano to be pursued beyond my classroom that may have never otherwise been discovered! I hope to provide this experience for my students.
