Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend a public kindergarten through eighth grade school in a high-poverty, urban community in New Jersey. They love music class and are great musicians. Even though we don't have a budget for new materials, we find creative ways to make music together.

When my students sing or play music in our music classroom, they do so along to a recorded track instead of a piano.

If we received a piano, it would really enhance their musical experience.

My Project

My students love to sing and play instruments and while they do so, I either play recorded tracks and/or join them on the classroom instruments, which include basic percussion instruments, guitars, and recorders. However, this does not compare to working with students with the use of a piano. While we have one in our school auditorium, we do not have one in the music room.

If we had a classroom piano, my students could benefit tremendously from a much richer accompaniment.

They would be able to rehearse with live music instead of recorded tracks. Playing alongside a piano would deepen their musical experience significantly.
