My Students
How many adults do you know that say... "Man, I wish I learned how to play the piano when I was younger!", or any instrument for that matter? These keyboards will give me the opportunity to provide this type of experience to inner-city students who would never be able to afford or find it on their own.
Our students love the arts and being able to express themselves creatively.
Each class (Kindergarten through 8th Grade) has both music and art twice a week with limited materials and suffer at the expense of a financial crisis they didn't create. While we do our best with what we have, I would love to offer the best experience I can to these students while they are in music class.
Our school is a small, high achieving neighborhood school in the heart of a large urban city. The small size of our school (one of each grade K- 8th grade, and a full K-8 program for students on the Autism Spectrum) contributes to our unique family atmosphere that values fundamental regard for all children. Our learning community serves an economically and culturally diverse population of students living both in the surrounding neighborhood and communities from around the city, all of whom receive free breakfast and lunch each day.
My Project
Our students love to work together in groups to discover, practice and refine new skills. This keyboard station, will allow our students to do just that. They will be able to take the skills learned during class, and to hear their progress for themselves. Using paper keyboards, just doesn't provide the kind of excitement and motivation to learn as the real thing does!!
Research shows that learning to play and instrument can increase a student's memory capacity and concentration, develops time management and organization, builds teamwork and social skills, enhances coordination, but also profoundly increases reading and comprehension skills, as well as mathematical skills. Why not help our students, who often come to school already at a deficit in many of these areas, learn in a fun, interactive way that shows results, but also can help them increase the skills needed to perform well on standardized assessments?
With your help, I can bring the hands-on experiences to all levels of our students.
Fostering a love for music and promoting self-confidence, allows them to realize they can use their minds and bodies together positively. Learning an instrument is a fabulous, heart-opening, and social activity that I believe ALL students should have access to no matter where they live or what school they attend. Thank you!
