Keyboarding Station for Music Centers

My students need keyboards to practice songs, skills and music theory in small groups. I use rotation stations on a regular basis and want a keyboarding station for its versatility.

My Students

I teach all 21 classes of 23+ students each from grades K-6 every week. My elementary school has a diverse student body with children from military families stationed at nearby Hill Air Force base, gifted and talented students who have been accepted in the two accelerated learner programs, and a variety of suburban neighborhood children including special needs learners.

The students are behind in "Essential Skills and Knowledge," since last year music was only taught part-time.

I am the third teacher in three years. This upcoming year will be my first year teaching at the school, and every student will have music class every week.

My Project

Keyboards are very effective in helping students understand simple music theory. As an instrument, it has greater range; for example, it can be played in different keys, and can complement some of my more limited instruments. A keyboard offers more opportunities to understand the concept of harmony. Keyboard notes are easy to understand because they repeated in an exact pattern. Playing a keyboard enhances general and spatial cognitive development, develops a sense of relative pitch, and trains your mind to recognize tones, intervals and chords.

With the earphones, students can practice and self-evaluate without the embarrassment of having an "audience." Having six keyboards would add a permanent keyboarding station in Music Centers.
