This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My choral students don't get to maximize on the ability to learn proper singing skills when we use an piano or keyboard application on a device such as a phone or tablet. The keyboard would do wonders not only for the ability to sing but also to play on a keyboard.

I work in a public charter school in the South-West side of Chicago with 99% of students coming from an underprivileged Hispanic community.

The neighborhood, unfortunately, has a large amount of gang related activity and our school is a safe haven for our students during school and after school hours. My students have tremendous potential to excel and compete locally and nationally, not only academically but musically as well.

My Project

The keyboard would be used in many different ways, not only for the vocal sessions within the structure of a class but for the choir ensemble of students who stay after-school to improve their singing skills. In the classroom, Solfeggio is a very important element of music and the students would have various opportunities to explore and also teach their fellow classmates. In addition, they would learn about intervals, low and high sounds as well as dynamic structures.

For the past 3 years, we have been without a keyboard and although a phone application or tablet will do little work, it is very limited and ultimately presents a very difficult task to achieve with over 550 students that attend the school.

The keyboard itself will aid not only myself as the educator in teaching the necessary skills but will also aid the students in learning about music theory, reading music skills, performing, taking care for the school property, and overall confidence.
