My Students

Each day that is spent with our students is a day filled with excitement and rigor. Our class contains a complex mix of multi-cultural backgrounds, varied abilities, and smiling faces. Our students enjoy using the many technological components in our classroom.

This year we have focused on STEM education and computer science in the classroom.

The students have participated in many different STEM challenges and began to write and develop computer code. We see the gleam in their eyes when they participate in these activities. This is what learning is all about.

Our school is located in a family oriented neighborhood in Brooklyn. We are a tight knit school and we consider the children in our class to be the future of our community.

My Project

I have 35 unique learners in my class. They do their best to manage their space and keep their supplies organized but there is just not enough space in their desk. We need plastic cubby boxes to keep our materials organized. If each child had a plastic container to keep their own materials in they could easily access them at any time during the day. I often hear the heartbreaking sound of a box of 136 crayons empty out onto the floor when a student tries to get their math workbook from their desk. I also see students who need to learn how to keep themselves organized for future success. If you think about the stress we feel as adults when our workspace in unorganized, then multiply that by 35. The kids are constantly asking for Ziploc bags to store their materials that always rip and need to be replaced. We need sturdy, clean, and clear storage bins for each child's materials. We also need a label maker to clearly mark their names on the bins. Students are constantly working on projects that have different demands. Sometimes not every child needs their supplies, so keeping them in one space with clear labels would make it easier for them to access them when they are needed. It also will help me, as an educator, assess which students need me to provide them with supplies. Some students come in with everything they need and some come in with nothing. It is easier for me to keep the supplies full when I know who is lacking and in what areas. Every student should have the supplies they need. I am more than happy to provide students with pencils, pens, crayons, markers, tape, etc. But I need to know who needs what!
