My Students

I am a kindergarten teacher in a Title I community school.

My classroom is often their first time in school, but now their home is their first classroom.

I want them to feel an excitement for learning. My students need to be warm and comfortable so that they can focus on the fun in learning that happens in a classroom and not have to focus on staying warm.

My Project

Over 75% of my students are wrapped in blankets on our Zoom meets due to little heat in their homes in the morning hours. They are in need of warm and comfortable clothing while they learn from home.

Most days my students are preoccupied with keeping warm by huddling under blankets and their emotional state is usually very agitated.

It does not feel good to be cold and this distraction takes away from their focus on learning.

I have been focusing on "Kindness Cures" since day one. I have been teaching them how a little goes a long way; a smile, a hug, a simple thank you, please. When someone is kind to us, it makes us feel special and gives us positive feelings, we feel good about ourselves and that shines through to others. I am teaching my students to "play it forward".

With your help, not only will I be able to supply them with sweatshirts, socks and warmth in the early hours of the morning, but it will be another teaching opportunity on the kindness of others and how it is infectious because it makes us want to do something for someone else.
