Keeping Warm in Rural Alaska!

My students need crochet hooks and yarn to learn how to crochet and make projects for gifts and fundraising of their own. They want to learn a skill they can share with others!

My Students

I teach in a Native Alaskan Subsistence village in rural Alaska. My students are sweet and hardworking. They love to fish, hunt, and pick berries. Many of my students want the chance to learn how to knit, crochet, sew, and do other valuable and fun arts and crafts.

Winter is long and hard in this part of Alaska and there are many days when the kids have few options for fun activities after school lets out.

Help give my students more options!

My Project

Your generous gift will allow my students to learn a new skill. I am asking for a variety of yarn and crochet hooks so that students can work together to create scarves, hats, and blankets for themselves and to donate to the local community (especially some of the elders in the area). The students will learn basic crochet stitches and how to complete a "grannie square". They will be able to use the yarn and crochet hooks to create a variety of individual squares and pieces for a blanket to donate to the community.

Learning to create something with their own hands will help them gain confidence, improve hand eye coordination, and give them a chance to gift back by sharing their completed hats, scarves, gloves, blankets with elders and loved ones in our rural Alaskan community.

Students in my school do not have an art elective, and supplies for arts and crafts will help me add to their curriculum to create well rounded students. Arts help students find the beauty in life. Children (and adults) who look for the beauty in their lives will go on to create beauty for others!
