My Students

"Teacher...can I have a pencil?" This is a sentence frequently used by my students during the school year. In high school it's a little unusual because most student have something to write with. However in my class, many of my students come from refugee camps. Formal education in their previous countries was inconsistent and norms such as purchasing school supplies is an unknown concept for our students.

Getting used to American culture and English is difficult enough, but the expectations of having your own supplies is an added challenge.

Especially when many of the students support their families too.

My Project

Most of my students are working to help with the household. Some are the only family members working, so they are supporting parents and siblings. Many of my students will take care of the younger siblings' school needs first before themselves. They know that they need these basics before coming to school, but their primary responsibility is to their family.

I often have to supply notebooks and pencils because there is no access to them at home.

The notebooks and pencils will be used to keep their notes and important materials at school. Please help with this basic need!
