Keeping Up With Technology Without Any Technology?

Help me give my students a shared laptop that has the capabilities to produce the creative video production and recording features they need. Many of the students I work with have learning disabilities and find a MacBook easier!

My Students

Our school is considered a Title I school, with many students living way below the poverty line and many parents holding 2 or 3 jobs. Many of these children go through more than any adults should have to and yet they are 11-12yrs old. These kids are resilient yet remain kind and caring, they are leaders who want to learn. They take care of one another and protect one another and are brilliant while they face tremendous challenges.

Our school itself sits on the bottom floor of a luxury residential building surrounded by coffee shops and stores that our students can not afford, I would like to work towards leveling this playing field as these kids are bright, funny, caring, and worthy!

We also have a Horizon Progam that services 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ASD students who we integrate into our general education program whenever possible. Dock Street believes in having a robust art department with dance drama, and visual arts. Our STEAM curriculum is authentic and our college-level habits start early with syllabus and majors becoming a part of our students' vocabulary in the first week of school.

My Project

Our Title I program has a well-established, much-nurtured arts component. In this way, we are unlike most public schools. We have fought for this arts program, giving it parity in importance with math and ELA. We provide an art cycle in 6th grade where EVERY student learns visual arts, drama, dance, and vocals. The student then picks a major for 7th grade and participates in an end-of-year showcase. This showcase is open to the public and we welcome you to attend for free!

As one of the counselors in this school, I have noticed that we don't have all the tools needed to take our arts program to the next level.

We have the heart, but not the technology to keep us up to par. I would like to offer our students the production capabilities that a MacBook can offer. What I find special about this project is that just one MacBook would meet the needs of our entire student body!

Many of our students struggle with learning disabilities. As I watch them try to move to computer learning, I am aware that the disparity between those with learning disabilities and those without is growing. This is in part because we are offering students PC'S because they are affordable, however, a PC does not have the instinctual components that an Apple product does. This can become a major disadvantage when there is neurodiversity. If you look at any private school, especially those that specialize in learning disabilities, you will see that they are heavily biased toward Apple for precisely this reason. Education should be free and equal.
