My Students

Do you still remember cassette tapes? Well, I still use them to record the children's verbal responses to share with parents at Parent/Teacher conferences. Taping is an authentic way to document the student's language development. It has become more difficult to purchase this out-of-date technology.

My students are typical five year old children, attending a public kindergarten in San Francisco.

Some come from single parent households, some have siblings, some have learning disabilities. But what makes these children special is that they are here to learn Chinese as a second language. They learn to Math in Chinese. They learn Science in Chinese. They learn Social Studies, art, even P.E. in Chinese! Like most children, they are easily entertained and also easily distracted. It is always a challenge to keep the children engaged. Incorporating the use of technology in the our lives has so many benefits. Many of the children already have experience using a tablet/iPad. They know how to use it to take pictures and play games. They are equally excited to view their own photos and videos. I want to utilize that excitement and record them in a school setting to document their language development.

My Project

At our school, learning Chinese is our goal. We keep the parents abreast of their child's progress through report cards and audio recordings. At the beginning of the school year, I record all of the children having a conversation with me, one-on-one. I share this with the parents during conferences. I do this twice a year, so parents can compare and hear their child's progress. I like to do the recordings because it is an authentic assessment of the child's language development. You can really hear their progress after just a few months! My problem is that I currently use an old cassette recorder. It has become increasingly more difficult to find places that even carry cassette tapes anymore. It is time to ditch the dinosaur and move forward with modern technology. A tablet would provide audio and video recording of the student during the assessment. The files can then be transferred to a central location where other teachers and parents will have access to these recordings.

I need your help to purchase an tablet for my classroom.

I want to be able to conduct audio and video recordings of the children using a digital format, not on an old cassette recorder, which is becoming obsolete. On a tablet I will be able to capture the children through video and get their facial expressions as well as their audio recording. The children are keeping up modern technology. How can I be an effective teacher without the basic equipment of today's modern technology?
