Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Okay kids, it's calendar time! What's that? Oh...right. Our calendar is missing some parts." That is the challenge I am faced with every day since the first day of school. I have lots of great ideas and lots of incomplete pieces with which to carry out my first grade daily routines.

I have a wonderful and diverse group of fantastic first graders.

About half of my students are English Language Learners who come from a disadvantaged economic status. Our school district is a tiny one with only two schools to be exact: one elementary school and one middle school. That means ALL students within the boundaries of our district, from T-K to 4th grade, pour into our school primarily by bus. This makes for quite a large population of students with diverse needs and backgrounds in one school. It is a small school district with an equally small budget. We depend on the generosity of kind strangers and volunteers to help us make ends meet.

My Project

This is my first year at this school. I got hired on August 8th, 2014, and it's been a whirlwind trying to create an updated, Common Core-friendly environment for my students ever since. The first thing I noticed as I was setting up my new classroom, besides the fact I was missing books, was that I had inherited lots of great things from previous teachers, but lots of those great things were outdated. With the latest academic trend of Common Core in full effect, I soon realized that many of the materials I had were not appropriate for the kind of activities I wanted to incorporate into my daily routines. And as an educator, I need to give my students the right tools to help them be active participants of this groundbreaking movement. My students need an updated calendar, 25 journals to help organize their daily written responses, and a center that provides independent work with a Common Core twist.

First grade is SUCH a crucial year.

It is the year with the biggest milestones, for it is the year in which students break the phoneme code and interpret the messages behind the words. These materials will help my students take what they have learned and apply it to more independent, student-led tasks.
