My Project

Ours is a dual mission high school. Students manage a complete schedule of academic classes AND additional classes in their particular artistic area (theatre, music, dance, visual arts, etc.) End of day often sees them absolutely wiped out. The goal of the clubs I advise is to give them a safe space after school where they can exhale, hang out with friends, and just be themselves. For some students, this unprogrammed time is a blessing. It provides a safe place where students know they are valued to stay. During winter with shorter days, providing a warm and welcoming space for our students is even more important. I make my time available for them after school in a variety of programs. Tuesday is our Film Appreciation Society. (Students suggest lists of appropriate films and then vote on each week's offering.) Wednesday I host a homework help/ tutoring session. And Thursday is Mah Jong Mayhem (watching them get more and more independent while playing is thrilling!) The Film Appreciation Society and Mah Jong club are all about building community. These clubs provide an opportunity for the kids to put concerns about school work or personal lives to the side for a short while and simply relax as kids. And I have so much admiration for the students who come to the tutoring sessions, advocating for themselves and keeping their work up to date. The kids are always hungry.

While we have encouraged students to bring snacks, there are several factors that play into our students being hungry.

Some students don't have the means to buy them, bring them, or store them. I try to always keep snacks on hand to help tide them over. Your generous support will help bring some additional snack and comfort to them on these afternoons.
