This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Our students are economically and ethnically diverse. Our population consists of mostly Hispanic and Chinese backgrounds. We have a population of students from shelters as well as the surrounding projects.
The school includes students with special needs as well as ESL students in need of extra support.
As a community, we strive to keep a safe and secure environment for all our students from Pre-k through 5th grade.
My Project
15 years ago we were very close to ground zero and 911. The administrators and teachers were unprepared for what followed. Many things have changed since that day for our society as a whole as well as schools around the country.
I am now a member of the Building Response Team (BRT) and we practice drills with students and meet regularly as a team to ensure that our school community remains safe.
In order to accomplish this goal, we are in need of supplies to create "go bags" to meet the physical needs of our students in the event of an emergency.
In an event of an emergency we will need things like a first aid kid (to help with injuries), two-way walkie talkies (to communicate with each other during a crisis), a card deck and checkers (games to calm students during a time of crisis) and paper and pencils for students to write down their feelings during a time of crisis so we can better meet their emotional and physical needs.
