My students come to the US to seek safety and opportunity from impoverished and violent countries, and I work to provide a learning environment that empowers them to participate in our dynamic, international city.
Paulo Freire wrote, "Education is the practice of freedom," and my students and I engage in that practice every day.
These students and their families have sacrificed so much to join our community, and I hope to provide the support them in making their hopes reality.
Last year, my students collected their work in hanging files and took notes in composition books. Soon, our classroom was an archaeological dig of mysterious materials. Many of my students are still learning basic school skills, so this year we are streamlining our process.
Class binders will provide students with a place to collect their class work and document their progress term-by-term.
Research shows that documenting student learning helps promote ongoing learning by helping students access prior knowledge.
While I document learning around the room, student binders will provide personal places for documentation in daily work and for our year-end portfolio project.
