My Students

I teach an energetic group of students with special needs in an urban Title I charter school in Baltimore City. They want to learn so much about the world around them and what's beyond the walls of our classroom. They come to school every day excited and ready to learn.

My students' disabilities range from Autism to Learning Disabilities and I find that the more hands-on and interactive learning can be, the more beneficial it is to my students.

Due to their disabilities, I am constantly changing up my teaching practices and finding new and exciting ways to reach and challenge my students without having them become frustrated and give up.

This year, I am teaching a group of 1st-4th graders in a pull-out setting, where I am helping them access the general education curriculum while also helping fill in the many learning gaps that they currently have.

My Project

I teach a large group of students (with special needs) ranging in grades from 1st-4th in math and reading. There are a lot of notebooks, folders, and papers passing through my room and it can be hard for my students to keep all of these papers and materials organized. My students need to start working with "older supplies", like calculators and pens in order to get ready for older grades and state testing; however, I do not have enough of these supplies to allow all of my students to use them at once.

I want to create a new organizational system (using a large hanging file folder holder and colored file folders) for my students in order to help them keep themselves and all of their work organized.

Each subject (math, reading, take home work) will get a different color and each student will get their own pocket. That way, all of their work will be in one place and my students will always know where it is (and I will know where to look in order to grade it).

Along with this new organizational system, we need more pens to write on our folders and my students get so excited by using pens that I want to use them to motivate them to complete more work! We are also learning harder math material and having working calculators will be a necessity to complete this work (and get ready for state testing). My students also go through A LOT of crayons, and once they're not sharp anymore students want to throw them out. I'm looking to not throw as many crayons out, and be able to create a "green" classroom by sharpening these crayons before we automatically go to throwing them out.
