Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach some of the most innovative, inspiring, intelligent, driven, entrepreneurial young people in the city. My students are eager to learn and engage in conversations which have left adults, including our superintendent, quite speechless. During class, my students lead and manage the conversation on most days. And it isn't just my twelfth graders! My tenth graders are equally capable of doing this pretty intricate dance of monitoring the speaker, allowing for wait time, and inviting new voices into the conversation.

I am elated to walk into my school building, walk into my classroom every day, and teaching remotely has been challenging since both I and my students enjoy and prefer the classroom which we have collectively made into a safe space where everyone gets to cultivate their voice, share their ideas, and learn from one another.

We look forward to walking back into our safe space, but until then, we need some much needed support, and so here we are!

My Project

We never have quite enough copies of texts we enjoy teaching. My students have ended up with tattered copies of books, used and reused every year.

I would love to give my tenth graders thier own copy of the novel so they can annotate the text as we resd it together.

Students follow teacher models and when they see my own copy of the novel, they are eager to have the same tupe of interaction with their copy. Sadly, they cannot annotate in their copies since those same books are waiting to be used by other students.

Reading is fun, especially when you can engage with the text by underlining your favorite lines, posing questions, highlighting new vocabulary terms.

Help my tenth graders have fun reading during these truly challenging times!
