Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Every year, my future 4th graders are given a supply list which not only includes notebooks, pencils and folders; but also wipes, sanitizers and tissue paper. Unfortunately, not all of my parents can purchase these necessary but expensive items. By mid-year, we are out of these supplies!

I am looking forward to meeting my new class in September.

I know some of them already because they actually approached me; stating how much they would really love to be in my class!! This already tells me how bold and articulate they are and I can't wait to start teaching them! PS 157 has about 360 students and we are expanding! Our Pre K to 5 school had been approved to go up to the 8th grade. Many of our students are returning after graduating from 5th grade. That speaks volumes about how satisfied our parents are with the quality instruction their children are receiving. The parents who work and can afford these supplies do send them to school with their children on the very first days of school. However, most parents are struggling in these hard economic times so they send the academic essentials.

My Project

My students need disinfectant and sanitizing wipes, soap, tissues, and paper products to help ensure a cleaner and healthier classroom-especially during cold and flu seasons. With these resources my students will be learning in a clean and healthy environment. There are lesson plans on the Clorox and Lysol websites for teachers to instruct students on health and science. I plan to use these lessons to teach my students about germs and help them describe ways in which a safe and healthy school and community environments can promote personal health. The objective of these lessons is to help students detect the types of germs that can make them sick. The websites also provide extension activities as well as take home activities. Students will also use the scientific method by making predictions, hypothesizing, observing and drawing conclusions.

I think educating students will empower them to transfer their knowledge to their families.

They will stress the importance of cleanliness and living healthier lives. Help keep our classroom clean and germ free!
