My Project
I am a special education teacher for nonverbal students with severe disabilities. All of my students in the school community have Autism or other cognitive disabilities. My students will not receive diplomas and often focus our IEP goals on functional academics and activities of daily living. One component of that is social emotional learning. My students use communication devices and visual symbols, and often need to be prompted to interact with their peers.
Help me promote kindness and communication in our school community by giving my students sensory toy items to share and spread kindness with their peers!
During Friday "free play" time, my students will run a "kindness" club where students who are caught doing an act of kindness can come select a prize! My students will also do the work to sort all of our prizes into bins for the students to choose from. When student, after being referred by their teacher, come to our "school store" to select a prize, my students will be able to show kindnes by walking them through the store and helping them to choose a prize! In this simple way, my students can demonstrate kindness and reward others for their kind actions! This community service project will meet my students at their level and allow them to serve their school community and show kindness and compassion in a way that's meaningful to them.
