My Students

Once the final second clicks off the basketball or soccer scoreboard in February, marking the end of the season, female students at my high school have two choices. They can run track or brave the chaotic Miami streets from February to next girls volleyball season in August. Up until now, track was it.

About 75% of my students are Haitian immigrants whose parents came to America to find better lives for their children.

They live in one of the poorest areas in Miami, and almost the whole school is on free/reduced price lunch. If these students did not have after school activities, they would go home to a neighborhood of crime and opportunities to get in trouble. However, with all this working against them, these 15 young ladies have an average GPA over 3.0 and are tops in their respective classes.

My Project

My students need uniform shorts and shirts and flag football sideline markers for Girls Flag Football as an alternative to the street during the spring season. The items I am asking for will allow my school the opportunity to offer flag football as an alternative to the streets for these 15 young ladies. The shirts and shorts will be their uniforms, and the number blocks will be used to line the field so that we can practice and have home games at the school.

If not for donations, it will be hard for the school to afford another sport.

In the 3 years I have been at the school, the school has had one profitable game. It loses money on every other game. The limited funds that are generated go to supplement all the losses. Adding another sport would mean buying uniforms and equipment which requires money that this school does not have. However, if the school does not offer Flag Football it runs the risk of losing another student to the street during the months it does not offer more than one sport.
