I teach 3rd grade at a Title 1 school that has a very diverse population. Many of my students come from across the seas. I have a student from Ethiopia as well as students who were born right here in Georgia.
Since my students are from mostly low-income families, I cannot ask their parents to purchase subscriptions to magazines. As part of their reading and writing assessments, they need to be able to read and write non-fiction. In addition to improving literacy, TFK will supplement our social studies curriculum.
Time for Kids is a magazine that exposes students to current events, non-fiction articles and things in which many of them are interested. Many of my students would be overwhelmed trying to read an entire non-fiction book, but they love to look at magazines. TFK comes with teacher resource materials and activities to help build comprehension. Some of my students do not have the opportunity to travel out of their neighborhood, let alone across continents; TFK gives them exposure to some of what is going on in the world outside of their community.
With many reluctant readers, magazines (especially magazines with short accessible articles) are an excellent way to hook them in. By helping to fund this project, you are giving my students an opportunity to experience non-fiction in a more positive way.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
