My Students

"Be silly, Be honest, Be kind." - Ralph Waldo Emerson This quote is framed at the front of our room to remind us to learn from each other as we work to become better readers, writers, and mathematicians.

We are a neighborhood public school in the city of Baltimore.

Class sizes range from 20 to 27 and our students come from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. We are a Title I school serving our community, and we offer after-school enrichment programs in Chess, Drama, Robotics, Girl Scouts, and Book Club. Our students have weekly instruction in music, gym, and library, and each spring we stage a school musical for which students audition and create set pieces and props. We are vibrant, but we struggle with funding, to say the least. Many of our students struggle with foundational skills in reading and work well below grade-level. Small group instruction is an integral part of our classroom day. I supply my classroom materials such as classroom library books, student book boxes and poetry journals, and bookshelves. These create a warm and inviting classroom in which my students can become lifelong readers and learners.

My Project

My students need 25 subscriptions to Scholastic News. This will allow each child to have their own copy of each week's issue of Scholastic News. We will use this magazine in class to read and examine topics in our community and the world at large. Students will use the articles for independent reading, they will take notes on the non-fiction articles as part of their research for larger projects, and our struggling readers can access the digital content on our classroom computer to hear articles read aloud. This magazine allows our class to have a common text to which we can refer as we learn to respond to text as 2nd graders.

Many students in our school do not have access to printed reading materials at home.

They treasure the books in our classroom library and are hungry to have more texts of their own. This classroom subscription gives them ownership of printed text as well as online access to additional educational reading material. As a community of readers and explorers, we can keep up with current events and learn about our world!
