My Students

I work at a small all-girls high school in downtown Brooklyn. I call my students "my girls" because there is a special bond that we have at our small school. Since the coronavirus school closures, I have been dependent on a personal computer to ensure that I can maintain these connections. Sometimes some students will just pop into my office hours via zoom just to chat.

We are a tight-knit community at UAI.

There have been many times when I have taught all of the siblings and cousins in one family. We are the type of school where teachers remain in close contact with students for years after graduation. We value connection and use an advisory model to build relationships to foster a sense of community and belonging with the students and their families.

My Project

I have come to rely upon my personal computer for engaging with students remotely. In order for me to use different apps and utilize zoom capabilities to its full potential, I need an up-to-date computer. Currently, I have been depending on an outdated device that does not allow me to share my screen or show my face via zoom because it does not have the capacity to do so.

It's imperative that I keep my students engaged in learning during these stressful times.

I have been eager to try new remote learning applications to provide proper support my students in this new environment. A new computer will allow me to use breakout rooms for small group discussions, the Kami app to support students reading rigorous texts, and use the Google Classroom to provide constant feedback for growth. Having a high functioning computing device allows me to give the extra support my students need in these perilous times.
