I am an Art teacher in a "Special Needs" school. My students vary in age from 10 years of age to 21 years of age. They have a wide range of mental and or physical disabilities such as: autism, mental retardation,downs syndrome, Asperges and many others. Due to all the budget cuts we have been hit with here in NYC, art supplies are dwindling.

Many of my students cannot read or write, but they can express themselves through their artwork. They are able to create beautiful works of art, which I display throughout our school. Some art is even used as therapy to work their muscles and minds. Sometimes the art process is important, not the end result. Art class has also boosted the confidence of several of my students who were too uncomfortable to even do any type of art. Now they are some of my best artists.

I have requested some basic materials that we are in dire need of to continue our art programs, and enrich these students minds and lives. These "special" children need to continue exploring the many avenues in art. We need the various materials so that we can have a diversified experience, and explore different branches of art.

This school year we are even planning a special "Gallery Walk" where my students' work will on exhibit, and parents will be invited to attend. We will serve refreshments, and the students will be able to stand next to their artwork and talk about it. Those who cannot speak may write about it and post it next to their paintings. I am trying to come up with interesting projects to involve, and captivate my students and expand their horizons.
