My Students

Inspiring children to discover their interests and passions in life is my ultimate goal as a teacher. As they master the core subjects, I want them to be thinking of their futures.

A shirt-tail relation wrote this to me: "An uncle of mine inherited G-Granddaddy's old microscope.

As a child, I was fascinated when my uncle would come home from college and show me slides under the scope. I was only 4-5 at the time, but I was hooked. Now I am a microbiologist working in a clinical hospital laboratory." I too wish to "hook" my 5th graders. They are curious ten and eleven years old children who need opportunities to experience science in engaging activities.

My Project

My students are naturally curious about the microscopic world. We only have one microscope, which impedes our ability to look at specimens in a timely fashion. My students will use the microscope to examine a variety of cells, and they will use what they have learned about cell structures to decide what kinds of cells they are seeing.

Just reading about things in the microscopic world is not enough for my budding scientists.

They need the opportunity to use scientific equipment. This microscope will provide the chance for my students to become engaged in science in a truly meaningful way.
