My Students

Each class we begin with a motivational object or a song. We warm up and sing. We exercise and then we dance or play instruments. The children love music, movement and dance. The students are all special education, including autism and physical disabilities.

We are a special education school in New York City.

The students in the school are on the autism spectrum, have physical disabilities and/or pervasive developmental disorder. They respond well to music, movement and dance. I work with children ages 3 - 10. They love the movement program!

My Project

We will use the instruments for multicultural celebrations, self-expression, creative dance and parades. The students will be able to beat the lollipop drums, try to keep a beat, use their arms to build up strength. The instruments and the activities will help build up their self-esteem, foster creativity, and build arm strength.

The students benefit through participating in the arts, which is a program that is not funded in our school.

The materials are necessary to keep the students motivated and expand their experience in the arts. The students benefit from the movement/dance/music program by increasing cognition, motor skills, conditioning, coordination and language development. When the students know I am coming to their classroom, they get very excited. They look forward to the activities.
