Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is located in a large, urban city with a diverse population. Many of my students come from single-parent families or from families where both parents work long hours to support their families. Oftentimes, several generations live together in the same house.

Many of my students come from homes where English is not the only language spoken, and many have come to us from other countries.

All of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. I am lucky enough to teach an awesome group of middle school students who are creative, eager, and enthusiastic. They are always interested in learning more about a topic and constantly challenge me to be on my toes. I want to teach my kids the required subject matter, but I also want to teach them to be themselves, have fun learning, and to love reading! Thank you for joining us on our journey.

My Project

Chicago winters are brutal! We get snow, wind, and below-zero temperatures for months. I teach in a neighborhood school which means that all of my students live in the immediate vicinity of our school. Because of this, there is no bus service to and from school. My students either get a ride or have to walk, many of them walk close to a mile to get to school. We are a high-poverty school so many of my students often times go without incidentals because their parents can't afford them.

I want to keep all of my students warm this winter, so we are requesting warm winter hats and gloves so that they can all safely make their walk to and from school without having to worry about frozen ears and fingers!

We have some extra gloves and hats available to needy students, but they have to go to the office to ask for them. Most of my middle school students are too embarrassed to ask, so they just go without. Having a supply of gloves and hats in our classroom would allow me to give them to needy students on the sly without embarrassing them.

Thanks so much for helping my students stay warm!
