This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Music Heals & Empowers! This has been the experience of many students during the 8 years that the program has been active. With classes based on a direct experience of music, our kids have discovered, not only the joy of making music, but the ability of developing resiliency through music.

My school is located between the cities of Bell and Cudahy, in the southern part of Los Angeles County.

The majority of the students are part of 1st and 2nd generation of Latino families that have immigrated to the country to provide a better life for their relatives. Considered a high poverty area, these kids are probably not very different from the ones that attend other schools in the vicinity. Their families have stories of struggle, that are fueled with their imperious desire to improve and the parent;s hope that the students can receive a good education that help to lift them out of poverty. Stories like this one are all around this site, but to me, these are not only words. These are faces and stories that have touched my life as a teacher. I've seen how many of them, through music, have felt fulfillment, have enjoyed sense of belonging. I have tried to instill them sense of pride and sense of empowerment. They are capable to do whatever and they just have to believe in it!

My Project

The electronic drum set has always been on the mindset of The Music Room @ Ellen Ochoa LC project., but it hasn't become a reality yet... Our music room is a project that pretends to expose the students to the joy of making music. Because of the cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the neighborhood, I came pretty soon to the conclusion that an approach to popular music through the use of keyboards and guitar would fit perfectly my purpose and the interests of the students. Because at the end of the year, the students play in different modern bands ensembles, we are always in search of drummers but, unless they already have equipment in their houses, it is very difficult to get them to practice in the school. An acoustic drum in the same room would disrupt the practice of the guitar/keyboard students. An electronic drum set will allow those students interested in percussion, to practice with headphones, to coordinate their drills and rhythms to any track.

Many students at many different moments have been begging me to allow them to practice with the drums!!!

I am convinced that this equipment in the room would be constantly used during the classes and greatly appreciated by the students. Many students would have the potential to develop a musical interest that could benefit there maturing process and will benefit the Music Program as a whole!
