My Students

When I see my students, I often wonder who they will become. They aren't just kids. They are tomorrow's leaders, workers, teachers, artists, doctors, builders, and coaches. My hope is that a love of learning and reading will grow in them this year and for years to come.

My 16 amazing students come to school curious, excited, and eager to learn.

I want to provide them with a variety of quality, engaging books.

What I love about my students is how wholeheartedly they are already embracing reading - even though the school year has just begun. Thanks to Donors Choose.org, I was able to expand my classroom library last year to include a greater variety of updated, more engaging books. However, it isn't quite enough. The students are reading up the books I have and asking for more! Non-readers have become readers! Students are buzzing about books! They recommend titles to each other and often are reading one book while planning what to read after that. However, we need more books to keep the momentum going.

My Project

Students in my fourth grade this year are reading up a storm! However, many of the group book favorites are old and falling apart. We would also like to add some fresh titles. Each fourth grader plans to read at least 40 books this year alone (and many set goals higher than that), so our library is getting tons of use!

The books from this project will go directly into the hands of fourth graders who are hungry for more reading.

Each day, our classroom has a one-hour readers workshop, during which students get a generous amount of time to curl up with a book and read independently. They also have discussions about books as part of reading groups. Then, several students keep a book in their desk to pull out whenever they get an extra minute. Each of these book experiences has an impact on student literacy growth. Keeping students' fed with quality books they WANT to read has been the biggest game changer!
