My Project

Two years ago we started a World Percussion class at Dillard Drive Magnet Middle School. It has been a great addition to our school's magnet theme of "Global Studies." With the help of donors like you, our global percussion class took flight. It has provided hundreds of students the ability to see, hear and play music from around the world on percussion instruments.

As our global music program grows we are in need of new instruments to expand the curriculum and continue to provide students with a window to the world through the study of music.

We are in need of two congas and one set of bongos for our Afro Cuban music studies. These instruments provide connections to the history, culture and dance of countries such as Cuba, Brazil, and Puerto Rico as well as the blending of many Spanish and African traditions found in those places. We are also asking for a set of graduated frame drums. These will be used to explore the music of Ireland by studying the rhythms of the Bodhran in addition to many Middle Eastern, African, and Native American cultures as well. And, since each drum has its own unique pitch, students will learn to express their own voice within the context of the group.

These new instruments will help students build the confidence they need to become better citizens, artists, scholars and teachers. Music can make a child better prepared for the world by exposing them to performance while stressing the importance of working together. Only together can we create something that is greater than the sum of its parts.
