Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a high poverty area. A number live in temporary housing. Yet they and their parents are determined to make education a priority. My students want to do well and are so proud when they raise their reading level, pass a math facts test or add to a classroom conversation. The focus and wonder that my student exhibit is amazing. Even on class trips they apply what we have learned - telling me this is an "urban" or "suburban" area as we drive along. Or, they identify some other aspect of the landscape.

All students have unique talents and gifts, yet mine often do not have a chance to explore these because of their socio-economic status.

Whether they be budding mathematicians, writers, artists, doctors, teachers or musicians - my students need support to help them discover themselves.

I am grateful for Donor's Choice to give me the opportunity to help my students grow.

My Project

These days classroom supply lists are long and costly. In a high poverty school, like PS 76, parents often cannot afford all supplies not the list. So children must go without Notebooks for a few subjects, not have enough folders to organize their work - or forever ask to borrow pencils and crayons because they do not have.

This supply list will ensure not only that all children have the supplies they need, but also they will feel equal because they do not want.

I have selected heavy duty pocket folders that will not tear and will last the year. The notebooks are the standard wide rule for this grade. The pencils are pre-sharpened so children do not have to interrupt a lesson to sharpen a new pencil.

I have asked for rulers because students must take standardized Math tests this year and I have found the clear rulers work best for this grade. I want all students to have the same ruler and I want them to practice all year with the ruler they will use on the test. Lastly, I have asked for scissors so we have enough for everyone.
