As a special education teacher in District 75, New York City's district for students with severe disabilities, I experience the joy of helping students learn to read for the first time. Unfortunately, as the teacher of 3rd-5th grade students with autism, much of the material accessible to my students who are just learning to read is not age appropriate or of high interest to them. In thinking back to some of the materials that made me a voracious reader as a child, I can't overlook magazines. Not only are they colorful and full of current events, but they are varied enough to allow each of my readers, no matter his reading level, to enjoy them. For this reason, I feel that my 3rd-5th grade special needs class would benefit from an ongoing subscription to Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. Please help me keep my students informed and motivated to read by contributing to these subscriptions for next school year. Thank you for your consideration!
