This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My 7th and 8th grade Home Economics students are an energetic bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. Our Title I middle school is located in a high-poverty, working-class neighborhood. About 60% of our student body receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of them speak English as a second language.

You wouldn't know it from looking at them, but many have already experienced trauma, disruption, and loss in their young lives.

After school, most either go home to babysit younger siblings at home or attend after-school care until 5 or 6. For young teens, this high amount of responsibility at home can sometimes result in extra exuberance while at school. Although some of them forget to focus on academics, most of our students are terrific, goal-setting scholars who might very well be the first in their families to attend college!

My Project

Our Home Economics kitchen has come together nicely this year, with kind donations from our benefactors on DonorsChoose.org! We opted for quantity over quality on some on the items we received, however, and a few things have broken. The plastic measuring cups we received at the beginning of the year have already had the handles snap off. The metal measuring cups we would like to replace them with will be much sturdier and won't break with normal usage. We'd also like to start replacing our cheap knives with a slightly more upscale set that will be sturdier. The white board film will help me transform a wood-paneled wall into a whiteboard.

Having step-by-step directions during a cooking lab is of paramount importance in a middle-school setting, and this whiteboard will help me write them in a central location that is clearly visible to all.

Currently, we have one old chalkboard that's hard for students on the other side of the room to see. We'd love to have use this film to create a bright and clear whiteboard for all students to benefit from.
