My Students

As a teacher for a special day program, I have an amazing opportunity to impact the lives of my students. We educate twelve students in a CORE autism program. Their grades span from TK-2nd. We follow the same curriculum as our regular peers but also emphasize learning social skills, school routines and the hidden curriculum. We need many different ways to learn including technology, hands-on materials, and opportunities to move.

Despite our label of having autism, we choose to break stereotypes by creating a family of empathy and working as a team.

My students often have difficulty communicating their needs and staying focused. Our needs vary from educational, to social, sensory and developmental support. I am committed to help them make breakthroughs to continue their education and work alongside their general education peers.

My Project

Teaching math virtually has been very difficult for my students to focus and participate. Our limited verbal and writing skills make it difficult to share our knowledge and participate in activities.

My students need a variety of hands-on materials to demonstrate concepts and participate in activities virtually.

Linking clips and Unifix cubes will help us with counting, patterning, addition and subtraction. Each day, we start with a quick writing activity to help build our stamina.

Wiki Stix and Pop Tubes are fun toys that can be used in a variety of ways to reinforce skills and motivate students. Now, more than ever, we have to be creative with our teaching and reinforcements.
