Help Mrs. M.

I am a new teacher and will be starting my third year by relocating to a new school. The school is located in an economically-challenged, historically under-resourced area of the city of a large city. Due to budget cuts and funding constraints, there is a limit to what the school can provide. I spend the summer scouring thrift stores, garage sales and back-to-school sales for supplies, but these run out quickly, as does my money. Since I am starting fresh in a new classroom, I am in need of some basic supplies, including some materials to help teach nutrition and healthy life choices.

The unfortunate reality of some preschool classrooms in urban areas is that they are in neighborhoods where local grocery stores do not carry a variety of healthy items. Poor nutrition can lead to a variety of problems for young learners, including low energy and attention, bone and muscle fatigue, and inhibited brain development.

Including healthy food in the dramatic play area provides models of nutritious options. Having these models in the classroom exposes the children to these foods and creates an opportunity to talk about healthy food choices. Preschool children are very adept at learning and understanding what is good for them, and I have found it carries over into the choices they ask for at home and the grocery store.

I am requesting a variety of materials, including books, puzzles, puppets, and games to facilitate teaching of nutrition and healthy food choices. Good nutrition is an essential building block for early learning and brain development. Help children gain an early advantage on their lifelong journey of learning.
