My Project

My students struggle with regulating their emotions on a daily basis. Many students arrive with some degree of anger, anxiety, or sadness due to events that happened at home or during their travels to school. For many students, the act of attending school creates levels of anxiety that lead to tension in their interactions with peers and staff throughout the day. They require access to a variety of methods to alleviate feelings of stress. Usually, we provide inspirational quotes or reminders, but we found that students find it comforting to hold an item in their hands as a way of redirecting them from the temptation to act out aggressively. Some students do carry a small toy at all times. By having access to multiple types of sensory items including fidget toys, plush toys, and therapy balls, students will be able to avoid negative interactions and focus on releasing their emotions into an object that won't break or cause them harm.

By donating to our project, you will help students to find acceptable ways to relieve stress, diminish incidents of verbal and/or physical violence, and enable them to stay focused on requisite tasks.

With access to their choice of sensory items, students will have a resource readily available when needed. Students have demonstrated a need when they expressed gratitude to utilize a limited number of fidget toys, plushy toys, and therapy balls while taking a mandated exam. Students became less anxious and remained focus on completing the task. Sensory items will enable students to regulate their emotions independently.
