Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Giggling, singing, and learning are non-stop in my special education, self-contained, kindergarten/first grade classroom in East Harlem.

My class is filled with the 12 best kindergarten and first grade special-needs students around!

Every day, they are faced with the challenges of socializing, fine and gross motor skills, communicating/understanding language and dealing with emotional needs. Even with each of their individual needs and challenges, they love coming to school and learning. Whether progress is made in baby steps or large gains, we are always celebrating the learning and social achievements of the students in class. Last year was the first year our school opened up a self-contained special education classroom. We are located in a high-poverty neighborhood and did not have enough funding to purchase necessary teaching tools and educational resources. Our classroom was full of unconditional love and an enthusiasm for education but lacked learning essentials. We had a great year last year and did our best but now we need your help!

My Project

I am requesting 2 bean bag chairs and 3 comfortable pillows. By having these items, I will be able to create a cozy classroom environment to enhance learning and engagement and address physical needs. The bean bag chairs and pillows will provide a cozy place for my students to curl up and get lost in a new book. Many of us like to read in a relaxing environment - perhaps on a couch or bed. My students deserve this comfortable environment too! Additionally, many children with sensory processing disorders and autism, benefit from deep touch pressure. Deep touch pressure refers to a form of tactile sensory input which is often provided by firm holding, firm stroking, cuddling, hugging, and squeezing. This is a calming effect that relaxes the body and reduces anxiety and nervousness. My students will be able to use the bean bags and pillows to address their occupational and physical therapy needs without missing instruction or leaving the classroom.

My students have special needs that are not always addressed because of a lack of resources.

By adding the bean bag chairs and pillows, my students will be provided with a comfy spot to retreat to with a good book. It will also allow for special occupational and physical therapy treatments to take place.
