Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a middle school on the northwest side of Chicago. The students here are 93.5% Hispanic and 95% are considered low income. We also serve a population that is 27% limited English proficiency.

After 20 years of general education, I am now working with diverse learners.

These students are so anxious to learn, but I don't have the materials I need to meet them at their levels. My students are in 6th and 7th grades, yet many of them are still learning to read.

My Project

All students, but especially Diverse Learners including those with ADD and autism benefit from various sensory inputs. My students are better able to focus when their hands are busy with an acceptable focusing device.

All of these tools help students stay focused and calm which makes them more open to learning.

The mindfulness prompts, decorations and coloring books will create a calm environment for students to better regulate their emotions.

Testing creates a stressful environment for my students and I have found that when I offer fidget devices all of them want them and say that it helps. Let's keep helping them with more options to relieve their stress.
