My Students

Hi my name is Ms. Alyssa and I am a speech pathologist in a D75 school for children with special needs (specifically Autism) in Brooklyn, NY. My students are amazing and have been doing the best they can with this difficult situation we have been in due to the back and forth of remote & in-person learning this school year. They benefit from daily routines, sensory diets, and social interactions with their peers.

My students have difficulty with their expressive language , receptive language, social/pragmatic skills, and feeding skills.

They benefit from hands-on materials that include adapted books to work on a variety of speech and language goals. We also make keepsake memory books for the students to share with their families all of the wonderful work they have done throughout the school year! My students are so deserving of having the opportunity to have hands-on materials that are durable and can have for years to come!

My Project

This school year we have been hybrid, remote, and full in-person while trying to do the best to engage our students. My students are in a D75 special education school with the majority diagnosed with Autism. Hands-on-activities are the primary way we teach lessons throughout the school day when we are in-person. Manipulating adapted books help with repetitive comprehension practice.

These adapted materials are laminated and bound by rings but tend to fall apart easily.

With a binding machine we would be able to make sure these materials hold up for multiple uses. We also send home these adapted materials for our students to help with carry-over.

Each week the students participate in social routines that consist of making a snack or arts/crafts project. At the end of the year we make a keepsake with directions, writing pieces, photos, and the art projects to send home to the families. It would be great to be able to send them home as binded books for the families to enjoy!
