I am a Kindergarten teacher in southeast Louisiana. The name of my school is Abita Springs Elementary located in Abita Springs, LA. Our school has about 600 Pre-K through 3rd grade students. The school is considered a Title I school because 54% of our student population receives free or reduced breakfast and lunch. As you know, Hurricane Katrina hit our area, St. Tammany Parish, 10 months ago. Life as we knew it has yet to return. As the new school year approachs, I am beginning to think of the materials I will need for the new school year. In the past, if I needed anything for my classroom, I would simply ask my students' parents. They were always willing and financially able to donate whatever was needed. However, considering the situation, I do not feel comfortable asking people who are already strapped for cash due to this horrible natural disaster. Money is still tight! Most people had to use their own money to fix their homes until the insurance companies reimbursed them; or in some cases, are still waiting for the insurance companies to reimburse them. Because of the above reasons, I am asking some kind soul to donate art supplies to my classroom. In a center oriented classroom, the art center is used daily and is a wonderful opportunity for the children to express their creativity. Items needed are: construction paper in all colors, drawing paper in all sizes, Elmer's Washable school glue, colored pencils, Crayola Multicultural Markers, washable markers, Crayola washable finger paints (in all colors),multicultural paints, paint brushes, colored charcals, Do-A-Dot Art, mosaic tiles, standard size crayons, glitter (in all colors), colorful buttons, sequins, pom pom class pack, feathers, pipe cleaners (assorted colors),wiggly eyes (assorted sizes), acrylic gemstones, Crayola Model Magic, and Crayola watercolors. The projected number of children for the upcoming school year is between 20 and 22. The children and I would appreciate anything you are able to donate to keep art alive in our classroom.
