My Students

It goes without saying that children should have access to grade appropriate books. Unfortunately, that is not always the reality. Please help us buy books!

My students are in grade K-2 and have been diagnosed with autism and/or an intellectual disability.

Our classroom is in a large urban school district that is currently in a severe funding crisis. My kids love to come to school and are very eager to learn. Although many of them have significant communication issues, they are learning to read and can respond to texts using a variety of communication strategies.

My Project

Imagine trying to teach a child to read without a book or with a book that is several grade levels too high. That's the reality of what I'm facing. My classroom reading program currently consists of old books that I've plundered from long forgotten closets. For this project, I've selected some very basic guided reading books that will allow my students experience reading success, develop independent reading skills, and help them progress to the next reading level. I've also included some expository text in the form of magazines to develop their abilities to read non-fiction.

Reading is fundamental.

It should be fun, developmentally appropriate, and available to all children! Please help us acquire the books and magazines that we need to become confident, competent readers!
